Description of Diablo Windows
Combining elements of traditional roleplaying games with the simplicity of an action game, Diablo achieved both critical and commercial success for Blizzard Entertainment and went on to become one of their best-selling games of the late 1990s. While there had been similar games in the past, Diablo was a landmark title which significantly contributed to the increase in popularity of the action-roleplaying-game subgenre following its release.
Set in the Kingdom of Khanduras (within the world of Sanctuary) the game’s plot is a fairly straight forward affair. A lone adventurer must journey into the dungeons below the town of Tristam fighting the monsters that inhabit them before battling the Lord of Hell himself, Diablo. As with many roleplaying games there are the usual choices of character class. The Warrior, Rogue and Sorcerer all have their own set of attributes and each has a unique skill which gives three very distinct ways of playing the game.
The dungeons themselves are randomly generated at the start of the game (which is good for replay value) and offer a mix of exploration and action based combat. While full of atmosphere, they can become slightly repetitive at times. However the game’s relative short length means it doesn’t become a chore and overall remains a fun action based alternative to the more hard-core roleplaying games of the time.

After following the same steps that GAME-TWE@KER listed my game still crashed.
To fix this all I had to add the Diablo.exe to the Data Execution Prevention.
- right click on my computer and go properties
- advanced system settings
- on the advanced tab go the settings under the performance heading
- Then goto data execution prevention, and turn it on
- add Diablo.exe and it should run.

For those trying to play Hellfire, and are getting a black screen instead, with the game probably crashing afterwards: copy the ddraw.dll of your Diablo instalation directory, and paste it on the Hellfire folder. It worked for me.

Before you start complaining about a lack of dialog or music check that you downloaded the ISO not the RIP. The RIP is a pre-installed version in a folder with no music or dialog to keep the size down. If you want the sounds that are missing you need to download the ISO version and use a virtual drive to mount and install or burn it to a CD and install.

Everything went fine installing diablo, but at hellfire, I mounted and couldn't find any file that would be HELLFIRE.bin, there was HELLFIRE.exe that didn't work, and double clicking setup didn't do anything either.

Beware of communists ignorants that says that everything with Windows are viruses, viruses are made with Linux OS, then released to attack Windows. I can say boo-hoo Windows users, to look cool. I prefer the easy ways that Windows let you install programs in your computer. Linux.. extract, recompile.. what else.. uhh! I don't want to recompile the whole program to play game, just I have no time for this. Double-click the icon and play, very simple, no 'sudo' or whatever.. So, please let those who play games in peace, keep doing your viruses and annoy big entreprises, Linux boy. (You should be happy there's tons of people that steel Windows, or hack the software every day.) If you can't play the game under Linux, use VirtualBox or Wine, your Ubuntu or Fedora or Red Hat will not be infected.

There is a step-by-step process to install and play Diablo - Hellfire with Windows 10 Pro (32-bit). (To install the Hellfire patch, you will need a 32-bit Windows or you can install and play Hellfire without the patch on a 64-bit Windows.)
Before proceeding to download Diablo - Hellfire and their respective patches (Diablo patch 1.09 and Hellfire patch 1.01) including the ddraw.dll this one is very important to copy inside your Diablo installed directory, or else Diablo will keep crashing, later I will explain how to troubleshoot that configuration file, so you can play the game on his maximum screen resolution, which is very close from 1080p (1650X1080 at 60 Hertz).
If you do not have a virtual optical drive, you will need one. Many folks around suggests to install programs such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% for virtual CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive(s), I prefer to use Virtual CloneDrive by Elaborate Bytes (very simple to install and to use and it does not conflict with games/programs that stop working due to virtual optical drive(s) installed.) During the install process, you check the .bin association box, you will need it to install Hellfire, at first the virtual drive will not see it, the last box on the bottom right you scroll down to All Files, and once clicked; you will see a angry-sheep icon, you select this one to install Hellfire. Later I will explain how to install it under a 32/64-bit environment.
1. Download Diablo the ISO version (631MB). The RIP version is Diablo already installed in a folder, both the music ambiances and voices are missing. The 'Belzebub mod works great too, it's a no-CD patch that comes with few add-ons and gaming improvements. It slightly differs from the original Diablo but you cannot install and play Hellfire. This is for 32-bit Windows, it did not try it for earlier version of Windows, but if it works on Windows 10, great chances it will work with an earlier version.
2. Extract the files inside a different folder within Download folder or on your Desktop or whichever folder you like, but not inside C:Windows or C:Program Files.
3. Right-Click your virtual optical drive select mount, in the pop-up box you select the folder where you saved the Image File (Diablo.iso), when the file is mounted in the drive you will see the Diablo autorun program that will tell you to install Diablo or Spawn (the trial version) you exit the installer. Right-click on the virtual drive and select Open, then select setup.exe, right-click and select Properties, then you choose the Compatibility tab and you check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2), then check 'Run this program as an administrator' box, click Apply and OK. Close all folders, on your desktop double-click This PC, then double-click on Diablo, select Yes when it ask you to run Diablo.exe. The install screen should pop-up, then install Diablo.
4. Go to C:Program FilesDiablo, right-click on Diablo.exe and click copy. In the same folder right-click and paste, select Yes at the pop-up windows. You will see Diablo - copy.exe, close the folder.
5. Extract the ddraw.dll file, like in step 2. Copy the file inside C:Program FilesDiablo, once again click Yes when the pop-up window appears. Close the folder.
6. Extract the patch installation file, like in the previous step, then double-click on drtl109.exe (Diablo patch 1.09), click Yes to install the patch. When the patch is successfully installed the game starts, and the game won't crash (not supposed too, if the game crash double-click on Diablo - copy.exe, to restart the game). Before enjoying hours, you need to configure the graphics. When you are in-game press the ~ key on your keyboard, under Esc key (shift+`), the programs goes into windowed screen again press ~, and select Full Screen: On, then select 1650X1080X60 and press enter, and have fun!
The same way is done to install and play Diablo and Hellfire (no patch) under a 64-bit Windows except you install it in C:Program Files (x86) folder.
7. To install Hellfire, right-click on your virtual drive and select mount, at first the pop-up window will not showing anything, then at the bottom-right corner click and scroll to All Files or (*.*), then select the file with a bin extension (HELLFIRE.bin).
8. IMPORTANT: THIS IS FOR A 32-BIT WINDOWS, YOU DO NOT NEED TO PROCEED WITH THIS STEP IF YOU HAVE A 64-BIT WINDOWS.
Mount the Diablo Image in the drive again, extract Hellfire patch 1.01, like step 2, double-click on hf101.exe, and click Yes to accept to install the patch.
9. Go to C:Program FilesDiabloSIERRAHELLFIRE (or C:Program Files (x86)DiabloSIERRAHELLFIRE) and double-click on hellfire.exe and play hellfire.
Be patient, follow these steps, if it do not works retry again, or use the alternative program (Diablo RIP or Belzebub mod) if you do not feel that patient.
ENJOY!!!

To Tea Hunter, you will need to get a program like Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite to install a virtual a disk drive, then you mount the .bin extension file and the drive reads it as a CD, then you install the expansion pack in C:/Diablo from your virtual drive. ( I suggest Daemon Tools Lite earlier than 5.0.1 version; downloaded from oldversion.com, it can read .bin extension files. Therefore; you don't need to convert them into .iso extension file).
I hope that helps

First, I haven't been on the internet in ten years. However, I've installed hundreds of pieces of software, into the XP environment. Just not much of the modern stuff. I downloaded Diablo into a C:/Diablo directory and ran the executable. The conventional game works just fine. But the original game I have no desire to play, as it is tedious beyond measure. [I've had the Hellfire-Diablo for years but do not currently have my disks available.. thus, this option.] I downloaded Hellfire, but all I get from the .zip extraction is a Hellfire.bin file - which I have no idea how to use. Suggestions?

To play Diablo without the color problem, try to open the Resolution Screen (Right-click on screen) and leave it in the background. Many guys say, this will solve it.
If not, do the following:
Create a .bat file (just create a new text file and save it as NAME.bat later) in the game directory with the following content:
__________________________________________
@echo off
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
diablo.exe
pause
start explorer.exe
exit
__________________________________________
Start Diablo with that .bat file. It will simply close your explorer.exe, before the Diablo.exe will start. The explorer comes back, when you quit Diablo.

Loved this game. I have a problem with the video on this downloaded one, though. It installed fine, used img mount and worked fine. However, when loading blizzard logo and for the in game dash are all weird looking. It looks like old school dos vga, light blue/green/red colors. Game works fine other than the distorted and pixelated color. bad sprites? not sure whats causing this. I run win 7 and use clonedrive img mount. Also, the patches wont install either. Hoped that would help, but cant even get those to install? Anyone ran into video issue?

I nearly crapped my kiddie-pants back in 1997, when I first saw and played it at a friend's place ^^
Today, I play it again with the Diablo 1 HD Mod (Belzebub - Download it here: http://diablo1.ovh.org/hd/?download ) for a completely new experience!
New classes, new enemies, new items (including rares and sets), new quests (which were originally actually built into the game but hidden in the programming code.) So awesome! Check it out - you won't regret it :)

The Mac OS 9 emulator found here works terrifically:
http://www.macwindows.com/OS-9-emulator-works-on-Mavericks.html
But both .sit files result in errors when they're opened in that emulator. The toast file doesn't work, and the other comes up with an error saying it needs a CD to run. If someone could fix this and supply a new file, it would be so great!

A free emulator for Mac OS 9 that runs on all versions of Mac OS X (at least, I have never had a problem doing so) is called Sheepshaver. I believe there are Linux and Windows ports now, as well, however, I cannot vouch for their reliability of those versions. I am a huge fan of all the Diablo releases and I have not had any trouble running Diablo 1 in Sheepshaver. Get info here: http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/#info.

I had it years ago, but things are changed now. I managed to get the game (D2 LOD) to run in a window, but I miss the not having to load in a cd.
I though the patch was for the 13 fix, but I downloaded and only had 13d to pick from.
May be useful to sticky where we need to find it. Thanks

Diablo 2 1.12 patch notes:
If all required Diablo 2 '.MPQ' files are installed on the
hard drive, the game will no longer require the CD to play.
For users that originally performed a 'Full Installation'
and wish to run without the CD, all '.MPQ' files should
be copied from the Diablo 2 CDs to the Diablo 2 directory.
Most users will only need to copy D2Music.mpq from the
Diablo 2 Play CD and/or D2xMusic.mpq from the Lord of
Destruction CD. Mac users will need to copy these music
files and rename them to 'Diablo II Music' and
'Diablo II Expansion Music' respectively.
Anyone who did not perform a 'Full Installation' will need
to re-install from CD again to ultimately play without the CD.
In this case, a 'Full Installation' is required, followed by file
copy step noted above.

What media types are you using for the two games? Are you using CDs or the digital installers from our website?

Hello, anyone can explain me if it possible to install and play w/o CD on win 10 downloading it from battlenet account?
Ginosaji,
If you've registered your game keys to your Battle.net account, your Account Management page will allow you to download digital installers of the latest release of the games. A cd is not needed to play.

Hi there,
I have similar problem. I got regirested my D2 LoD, downloaded the digital installer but it says I need to install D2 first.
Thing is when I try to register my D2 it shows an error:
'The key could not be used. Check the key and try again.' - or something like that.
So I tried to install it via CD. I didn't choose full install.
Did install D2, then LoD, then updated the game via BattleNet to version 1,14d (probably it was 'd'). I could play without CD yesterday, then rebooted PC and now it says I need to insert CD.
Why?

Blizzard has released patch 1.12 for Diablo 2 and along with it is a no-CD update. No longer will you have to insert a CD to play the eight year old RPG, better late than never. Patch 1.12 also resets the game's ladder. Here are more detailed patch notes from Blizz Planet:

Bug Fixes
- Fixed an incompatibility between Rosetta and OpenGL mode on Intel Mac.
You can download the update by lauching the game's Battle.net. For more information on Diablo II, read our ancient review of the game.
I found my old copy of diablo 1 but nothing is working for me, NOTHING. If I try to play the game as is with the original disc in my drive it installs the game but when I play it it says please insert cd.
I tried everything. I ran it in compatibility for 95,98 and 2000 and i ran it in 680x480. I downloaded the no-cd loader which fixes the problem but as soon as I run it I get either an instant crash or 'could not find direct 3d9 device' error message.
I have no idea what to do but I honestly browsed the first 3 pages of google spent 4 hours trying to get this to work but its still not working.
YES I tried it with patch 1.09b and with the unpatched version I even found an old patch 1.08 to try and make it work.
I've tried every combination of fixes, Sometimes it says You must install directx 3 to make this work but it won't let me install it because I already have a higher version DX 11

Windows 7 and up seem to hate that game. Anything running a 64 bit OS hates that game.
Best luck is to run an old XP system, even an old laptop will play it. You won't need any fancy graphics anyway.
I have an older Dell quad core running XP SP2 just for older games. Works perfectly.

Try Virtual PC or whatever programs there are to emulate an older Windows OS. Worked for me numerous times.

To run Diablo 1 on Windows 7 and 8. The game is no longer supported by Blizzard, so it requires some strong-arm effort to run on any Windows version newer than XP.
1. A legit copy of Diablo
2. Patches 1.09 and 1.09b:
3. The Diablo No-CD Loader, which corrects the now non-functional CD-check built into the game, (without it you will receive an error) also fixes messed up colors and cinematics (it kills explorer.exe on starting the game, and relaunches it on exit)
4. For multiplayer, Diablo is written to use an out-dated LAN protocol called IPX, so for you will need an IPX wrapper: http://www.solemnwarning.net/ipxwrapper/
Instructions:
1. Run Diablo's normal install. To do so, insert your disc and on it locate setup.exe
2. Right click setup.exe and select Properties from the dropdown. Navigate to the Compatibility Settings tab, check the box next to 'Run this program in compatibility..' and from the dropdown box beneath it, select Windows 98/Windows ME, and then press OK
3. Run setup.exe, and choose to install - if the option presents itself, choose Custom Install and direct the game to install into a directory such as C:Diablo, not C:Program FilesDiablo.
Do NOT run the game yet. If a box is present which provides you the option to launch Diablo, verify that it is unchecked before completing the installation. Running at this point may crash your system.
4. Once install is finished, press CTRL ALT DEL and navigate to your Task manager. In your Processes tab, you may have a residual Diablo.exe - highlight it and press 'End Process' - if it's not there, no sweat. If you experience an error while attempting to perform the next steps, which may request you end the game, repeat this step before proceeding.
5. Now, you want to patch the game - the patches contain a lot of bug fixes. To do so, you must run the 1.09 patch before running 1.09b. Before running them, do the same as before, in step 2, and change both patches' compatibility settings for Windows 98 compatibility before running either. Both of them will attempt to launch Diablo on completion of their installation. This is harmless, although it may require you to repeat step 04, and it may cause Windows to become unresponsive. If it does, perform a hard reboot.
6. Install the NO-CD patch! Simply run the executable and instruct it to install directly into your C:Diablo directory - not C:Program FilesDiablo, not C:DiabloDiablo. If you mess this up, you can do it again. It will ask to create a Start Menu item in a folder called Diablo, allow it to do so. If it launches the game, exit.
7. Extract the contents of the IPX Wrapper archive to wherever, open its folders and locate the following files: ipxwrapper.dll, mswsock.dll, and wsock32.dll - copy them to your C:Diablo directory
8. In your C:Diablo directory, locate and right click DRTLNoCD.exe - press Properties, and change its compatibility settings to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
9. Launch the program via C:DiabloDRTLNoCD.exe or Diablo No-CD, which is located in the Diablo folder in your start menu at Start -> All Programs -> Diablo.
And that's it! If you performed all of the listed steps properly, you will now be ready to play Diablo in Multiplayer mode via UDP, which is compatible with virtual LAN software such as Hamachi.

I followed every single step in order except for the IPX part, I just want to play singleplayer however, multiplayer I can live without. I used this same computer to play it years before but now I'm having absolutely no luck whatsoever. Spent countless hours trying many fixes, even tried some torrents (I have the physical CD right next to me so it shouldn't be illegal if the damn game doesn't read it)
Nothing worked :(
I appreciate the time you spent in your response though and thank you greatly.
I guess it depends on the version of Win 7 that you're running, and probably your computer setup.
I installed D1 two weeks ago. I run Win 7 Pro, 64-bit, and had no problem playing the game (run it as administrator and in Win XP SP 2 mode). However, I also installed the Hellfire expansion, and that caused video issues. After a little research I discovered that if you stop Win Explorer from running, the video issues go away. There's an example of a batch file you can make that will automate the process (except when you leave the game, you're looking at an empty screen with a small window present that talks about running explorer, just hit a key and everything goes back to normal).
Also, there's a Command file you can setup, and there are examples on the net, that will let you add a Bard as a character, and some additional quests.
Good luck.
If you're into D2 like I am, there's a recently released mod named IsAlive available that makes the game harder, and has a lot of additions and changes built into it. You will need D2SE, a mod manager, to run the game.

Buddy you get marked as a solution just because its so hard to find anyone who plays d2 anymore. I feel like the only 'oldfag' on this forum. I was around D2 when hacked charms were around, was around when set items were godlike, then when it was all uniques, played when runewords were the new big thing as well and I even played when certain rare items and rare jewels were also considered godlike.
Was a pretty good GM pvp smiter in my time. Feel free to add me up I'm looking to start ladder again mate.
try this

I am going to add this because I did a lot of searching.
First I also tried to play Diablo 1 on a Am2 motherboard with all sata handled drives, including the IDE interface. I did notice that my cdrom drive also has a hidden dvd drive that has an icon generated when I use virtual clone cd software. I still use XP because I can and it is more classic friendly.
There is a modification to allow no cd use. It is just the storm.dll file with 3 string hex values changed if using version 1.09b.
I have also tried playing the hd mod. That is way different than I expected. When I installed it; if you can call cut and past an install. It belly ached about not having 2 additional MS dll files, of which I found by searching my drives and then copied and pasted them into the diablo directory.
I do know that diablo 1 will work on my classic and socket A platforms that also use drives that aren't burners and pre Sata.
I have not tested to see if sata or having a multi cd-rw-dvd drive confuses diablo1. Even though a no cd mod can work for you, wouldn't it be more fun finding exactly what causes the original install exe from finding the cd drive in some cases to begin with.
Diablo 1 was and is a great game. The thing it has that is superior to the latter variants, is the way spells were learned. I miss the way you found books to read that taught you spells instead of them being essentially given to you with experience. You should have to search for them in never the same places to make it interesting. I also can't tell you how many times I had my butt handed to me.
